Did you know there are four large companies who control 85% of all beef in the United States? You’ll recognize at least one name: Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill and Smithfield Foods, according to Christopher Leonard, author of the book The Meat Racket.   Cooktown Cattle decided it was time to bring better quality and a lower price to the local market.

On Cooktown Cattle’s farm, calves are weaned at about 5 to 7 months old when they weigh between 500 and 700 pounds.  The calves are grain-fed until they reach an ideal weight of approximately 1200 to 1500 pounds.

The purchasing process is simple – place your order and tell us what butcher/processing plant you want it sent to.  When the processing is complete, pick up your packaged meat and enjoy your high-quality beef.  Prepare it the way you like it in your favorite recipes, whether you love burgers or steaks on the grill, pot roasts or stews in the slow cooker.

Everyone knows when you buy in bulk, the price per pound drops considerably.  For example: a 1200 pound steer will yield you approximately 500 pounds of various cuts of meat.  The cost per pound is a lot lower than you’d think.
